The contributors to this volume examine, from different perspectives, the relevance of an Islamic identity in Canada. Does an Islamic identity make sense in a secular country? What does it encompass? How does it relate to national, racial, and ethnic identities? Doesn't it draw a curtain between itself and the rest of a secular nation? Does not this identity in fact give rise to the perception of the Muslim as the Other and to suspicions of non-patriotism, subversion, etc. Shouldn't religious faith be something private, in a secular country?

In Producing Islam(s) in Canada, scholars from a wide range of disciplines come together to explore what is at stake with representations of Islam(s) and Muslims in academic scholarship.

This handbook provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary overview of the key issues, theories, debates, and developments in gendered Islamophobia, unpacking how Western, Orientalist constructions of Muslim men and women affect the lived experiences of Muslim men and women; impact social, legal, and criminological policies, practices, and discourse; and give rise to resistance against gendered Islamophobia.

Intended as a guide, the volume identifies important points of consideration that have systemic implications for whether, how, and under what conditions Islamophobia is enabled and perpetuated, and in some cases even rendered respectable policy or bureaucratic practice in Canada.

Huda Mukbil, a Black Arab-Canadian Muslim, chronicles her life as an intelligence officer in Canada's lead spy agency, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.
