E-Resources at McGill Libraries

News, updates, known issues, and troubleshooting solutions for access to databases, e-books and journals from McGill Libraries.

Resources Requiring VPN

Why Do Some Resources Need VPN?

For the vast majority of library e-resources, EZproxy is more than sufficient to handle authentication and access. Several reasons can however mean that VPN is the preferred or sole method for very small selection of providers. (See the next tab for a complete list of these resources.)

Sometimes, the need for VPN can be a result of the license agreements we have with publishers which specify that access by proxy is not permitted.

Occasionally, it can also stem from the underlying site architecture of a content provider's website or database.

In rare cases, we may also recommend VPN as a temporary workaround for access to a resource for which we are actively troubleshooting an issue via EZproxy.
