Chi-Square Test of Independence

Research question type: Association of two variables

Variable type: Categorial

Assumptions:

  1. Independent observations. There is no relationship between the subjects in each category.
  2. The expected frequencies for each category should be at least 1. No more than 20% of the categories should have expected frequencies of less than 5.

How to run a Chi-square Test of Independence

  1. From the menu, choose Analyze > Descriptive Statistics > Crosstabs. The “Crosstabs” dialog box will appear.
  2. Select one variable as the Row variable and the other as the Column variable.

  1. Click Statistics, select Chi-square, then click Continue.

  1. Click OK.

The output should look something like below:

In this example, we test whether job satisfaction is related to gender. Based on the Pearson Chi-square statistic in the Chi-square Tests table where the value of the test statistic is 9.042 and the corresponding p-value is 0.06, we can conclude that job satisfaction is not related to gender at the 0.05 significance level (p>0.05).
