Guide to using Music Library equipment

Tips on which AV items suit certain needs and on how to use the equipment

Video cameras available to current McGill borrowers

Canon VIXIA M52 and R82 camcorders (M52 user manual) (R82 user manual)

  • Two (2) M52 camcorders and four (4) R82 camcorders are available for loan
  • VIXIA M52 (older model) and VIXIA R82 (newer model) 
  • Both VIXIA camera models have 32GB of built-in memory, and can also record to SD memory cards
  • When recording in .MP4 format, the VIXIA cameras have a 30-minute recording limit per file. Users can record multiple 30-minute files, but each .MP4 file will be a maximum length of 30-minutes
    • For recordings longer than 30-minutes, choose the AVCHD file format before starting the recording
  • Both models have good picture quality and OK sound quality. For better sound quality, consider recording your audio separately and combining it in post-production

Zoom Q8 (user manual)

  • Four (4) Zoom Q8s are available for loan
  • Has a wide-angle lens that can produce a "fish-eye" effect when zoomed in
  • Has a stereo pair of microphones built into the camcorder, and 2 XLR ports to plug microphones into the camera
  • Record good picture quality and excellent sound quality

Optex Safari 3 4K action cameras (user manual)

  • Three (3) Optex Safari 3 4K action cameras are available for loan
  • Small compact camera, meant for action shots
  • Similar size and portability of a Go-Pro camera
  • Comes with waterproof casing and multiple different mounts to get a close-up view of action footage

Lighting

Genaray SP-E-500D LED Light (user manual)

  • Two (2) LED lights are available for loan
  • Freestanding lights to assist in brightening rooms
    • Two (2) freestanding light stands are also available

SWIT S-2010J camera light (user manual)

  • Two (2) camera lights are available for loan
  • Light attaches to a camera hot shoe, not free-standing
    • Optional power supply also available for loan

Verilux HappyLight Liberty lights (user manual)

  • Four (4) lights are available for loan
  • Intended for use as a light therapy lamp, but can also be used as a secondary fill light for video recording

Video cameras available to Music borrowers

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6K G2  (user manual)

  • Two (2) cameras are available for loan
  • Purpose-built for still photos and video capture
  • Requires an SD card – not supplied by the Music Library
  • Has a large sensor able to shoot in 6K (6144 x 3456 Super 35 sensor)
  • EF mount is compatible with Canon lenses, can record a shallower depth of field
  • When not in use, all caps (camera body cap, front and back lens caps) should be in place to protect cameras from damage/dust
  • Camera body is quite large
  • Cameras are in backpacks to accommodate their size. As an anti-theft mechanism, the backpacks open from the back

Canon XF 100  (user manual)

  • Three (3) cameras are available for loan
  • Requires CompactFlash memory cards – not supplied by the Music Library
    • 16 GB CompactFlash cards are available for purchase from the supplies vending machine by the RVC cafeteria
    • The SD card slot in the cameras is only to save settings preferences. Video will not record to an SD card
  • Records to proprietary video formats that need a high-end video editing software to process
    • Video files can import to Final Cut Pro (available in the Music Student Computer Room and on Mac laptops available for loan), Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, or other high-end video editing programs

Nikon D750 DSLR   (user manual)

  • Two (2) cameras available for loan
  • Similar quality and functionality of the Nikon D7500 cameras
  • Purpose-built for still photos and video capture
  • Is a full-frame camera
  • Requires an SD card – not supplied by the Music Library
  • When not in use, all caps (camera body cap, front and back lens caps) should be in place to protect cameras from damage/dust
  • Due to European Union tax laws, has a 30-minute continuous recording time cut-off. Able to record multiple 30-minute clips (based on SD memory card size)

Nikon D7500 DSLR  (user manual)

  • Two (2) cameras are available for loan
  • Similar quality and functionality of the Nikon D750 cameras
  • Can shoot 4K video
  • Purpose-built for still photos and video capture
  • Requires SD card – not supplied by the Music Library
  • When not in use, all caps (camera body cap, front and back lens caps) should be in place to protect cameras from damage/dust
  • Due to European Union tax laws, has a 30-minute continuous recording time cut-off. Able to record multiple 30-minute clips (based on SD memory card size)

JVC camcorder  (user manual)

  • Three (3) cameras are available for loan
  • Requires SD memory cards – not supplied by the Music Library
    • 16GB SD cards are available for purchase from the supplies vending machine by the RVC cafeteria
    • Records to proprietary video formats that need a high-end video editing software to process
      • Video files can import to Final Cut Pro (available in the Music Student Computer Room and on Mac laptops available for loan), Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, or other high-end video editing programs
  • Recorded video has high-quality audio and visuals
  • All JVC cameras have some means of charging, either a battery charger or an A/C adapter. Not all cameras have both
    • JVC cameras 1 and 3 have stripped tripod screw mounts and require additional support, such as tape and/or straps, to securely attach to tripods. As such, these cameras should be considered as options of last resort
    • JVC 2 can still be attached properly to any tripod

Sony α7Sii (user manual)

  • Three (3) cameras are available for loan
  • Requires an SD card – not supplied by the Music Library
  • Purpose built for still photos and video capture
  • Full-frame mirror-less camera
  • Camera body, lens, and XLR adapter kit (for attaching high-quality microphones) are loaned as separate items
  • One of the highest quality cameras currently held by the Music Library. They are EXTREMELY delicate and need careful handling
  • When not in use, all caps (camera body cap, front and back lens caps) should be in place to protect cameras from damage/dust

Atomos Shogun Inferno 4K monitor  (user manual)

  • One (1) 4K monitor is available for loan
  • 7", 1920 x 1200 high-definition touchscreen display
  • HDMI and 12G-SDI inputs and outputs, records up to Ultra HD 4K/60 signals to 2.5" SSDs
  • Multiple audio options replacing the need for a separate audio recorder

Tripods

Most tripods are paired to particular cameras. If you require a tripod with your camera booking, please mention this in your reservation to receive the paired tripod.

Should you have your own camera, a few Optex TP160 tripods are not matched to a camera and can be requested separately.
