Guide to using Music Library equipment

Tips on which AV items suit certain needs and on how to use the equipment

Portable audio recorders available to current McGill borrowers

Zoom H4N PRO (user manual) (SD card compatibility list)

  • Six (6) H4N PRO recorders are available for loan
  • Microphones are built-in and fragile. Adjust by rotating microphone heads
  • Has two (2) XLR ports to allow for up to 4-channel recording
  • Navigation is through on-screen menus and a selector wheel on the side. Scroll with the wheel, select by pushing the wheel into the device
  • Memory cards and batteries are not included, borrowers must use their own. Only accepts SD cards up to 32GB size
  • Has a standard threaded tripod mount on the back of the recorder

Sony PCM-D50 (user manual)

  • One (1) PCM-D50 is available for loan
  • Microphones are built-in, adjust only in the horizontal plane
  • Built-in battery included
  • Memory cards not included, borrowers must use their own. Note: memory cards are proprietary, Sony brand only
  • Navigation is through buttons rather than on-screen menus
  • Has a threaded tripod mount that fits standard tripods

Microtrack II (user manual)

  • Four (4) Microtrack digital audio recorders are available for loan
  • Important note: plug the microphone into the top of the device (labeled “MIC”), otherwise it will not pick up any sound
  • To move files onto a computer, first connect the USB cable to the computer. On the recorder, select “Connect to PC” on the settings menu
  • Navigation is through on-screen menus and a selector button on the side. Gently flick the button to scroll up or down, select by pushing the button into the device

Korg MR-1000 (user manual)

  • One (1) MR-1000 recorder is available for loan
  • Can operate on batteries, which makes it a good choice for field recordings and podcasts
  • Allows high-precision condenser mics to be used
  • Includes AudioGate format conversion software to convert audio files to different file formats

Sony Stereo ICD-UX523 USB recording devices (user manual)

  • Two (2) ICD-UX523 USB recorders are available for loan
  • Small portable recorders good for recording speech, field notes
  • The USB connection slides into the recorder when not in use

A note about Zoom mic clip adapters

Zoom mic clip adapters

  • The Music Library loans a limited number of Zoom mic clip adapters
  • Connect via the threaded tripod mount to fit a mic clip for use on a mic stand rather than a tripod
  • Compatible with mic clips for the Shure SM57 and SM58 microphones
  • Compatible mic clips also available for loan

Zoom H6 (user manual) (SD card compatibility list)

  • Three (3) H6 recorders are available for loan
  • Has four (4) XLR ports to allow for up to 6-channel recording
  • Microphone heads are interchangeable. Be careful of the plastic sleeves protecting the connection ports.
  • Memory cards and batteries are not included, borrowers must use their own. Accepts SD cards up to 128GB size
  • Has a standard threaded tripod mount on the back of the recorder
