Microphones available to current McGill borrowers

USB microphones

Blue Yeti Studio (user manual)

  • One (1) single microphone is available for loan
  • Multi-patterned (cardioid, stereo, omnidirectional, bidirectional) condenser microphone
  • Side-address microphone, meaning the sound source should be set perpendicular to the microphone
  • Great for podcasting, vocal recordings, field recordings
  • Connects directly to a computer via USB connection

Rode NT-USB (user manual)

  • One (1) single cardioid condenser USB microphone is available for loan
  • Side-address microphone, meaning the sound source should be set perpendicular to the microphone
  • Includes a pop filter for minimizing plosives while recording vocals
  • Connects directly to a computer via USB connection

Shure MV5 (user manual)

  • Three (3) single condenser microphone are available for loan
  • Small USB mic ideal for mobile applications
  • Three different modes to select from: vocal, flat, or instrument mode.
  • Connects directly to a computer via USB connection

Blue Snowball (user manual)

  • Two (2) single microphones are available for loan
  • Multi-patterned (cardioid, omnidirectional and cardioid with -10dB) condenser microphone
  • Great for podcasting and recording spoken word recordings.
  • Connects directly to a computer via USB connection

Blue Raspberry (user manual)

  • One (1) single condenser microphone is available for loan
  • Small USB mic ideal for mobile applications
  • Connects directly to a computer via USB connection

XLR microphones

Shure SM58 vocal and SM57 instrumental microphones (user manual)

  • The Music Library has twelve (12) SM58 vocal microphone kits and seven (7) SM57 instrumental microphone kits
  • Each kit comes with a 25-foot XLR cable, mic clip, and XLR-1/4” adapter
  • This microphone is easy to use, with a very rugged construction

Rode NT55 (user manual)

  • One (1) pair of condenser microphones are available for loan.
  • Sometimes called “pencil mics” these are cardioid condenser microphones best suited for recording acoustic instruments, overheads, or spoken dialogue when using a mic stand or boom.
  • As with any condenser microphone, requires phantom power to operate

Sennheiser MD 21 U (user manual)

  • Two (2) single omnidirectional microphones are available for loan
  • Broadcast microphone intended for interviews, spoken word recording
  • This microphone has a European mic thread, so needs the included North American mic thread adapter to work with Music Library microphone stands
  • This microphone is only available for McGill Music students, faculty, and staff

Blue Baby Bottle SL (user manual)

  • One (1) single condenser microphone is available for loan
  • Large diaphragm studio condenser mic good for mid-range sounds
  • Cardioid condenser microphone with built-in high-pass filter & -20dB pad.

Neutrik 25-feet XLR cables

  • Six (6) 25' XLR cables are available for loan
    • XLR cables are the most common connection cable for microphones, mixers and speakers

Mogami 15-feet XLR cables 

  • Sixty (60) 15' XLR cables are available for loan
    • XLR cables are the most common connection cable for microphones, mixers and speakers

Neutrik XLR > 1/4-inch adapters

  • Many XLR > 1/4" adapters are available for loan
    • These adapters can allow an XLR cable to connect to a device with 1/4" TRS inputs

König & Meyer 210/6 black microphone stands 

  • Over forty (60) microphone stands are available for loan

König & Meyer table microphone stands

  • Two (2) table-top microphone stands are available for loan

AEA SMP17 microphone positioner bar

  • One (1) positioner bar is available for loan
    • This positioner allows for precise placement of up to 3 microphones on the positioner bar

Cloudlifter CL-1 mic activator

  • Two CL-1 mic activators are available for loan
    • The CL-1 is a mono mic activator

Cloudlifter CL-2 mic activator

  • One (1) CL-2 mic activator is available for loan
    • The CL-2 is a stereo mic activator

Radial Engineering ProDI passive DI box

  • Two (2) ProDI passive DI boxes are available for loan
    • These are mono DI boxes

Radial Engineering ProD2 stereo passive DI box

  • One (1) ProD2 stereo passive DI box is available for loan
    • This is a stereo DI box

Stedman Proscreen XL microphone pop filter

  • Two (2) pop filters are available for loan
    • These are metal mesh filters to attach to a mic stand to minimize plosives and other variable puffs of air when recording vocals

Blue Icicle XLR to USB converter (user manual)

  • One (1) Icicle converter is available for loan
    • This converter connects an XLR cable to a USB input for use with a computer with USB ports
    • This converter is small, light and portable. For higher sound quality, a dedicated audio interface is preferred

RØDE Micro-Boom microphone boom poles

  • Two boom poles are available for loan

Triad-orbit GB-3 Grav microphone ballast / weight bags (user guide)

  • Two (2) sets of three (3) weight bags are available for loan
    • Microphone stand weight bags for adding stability to a microphone
    • Priority borrowing with the Lauten Oceanus LT-381 microphones is enforced, as these mics require a weighted microphone stand

Microphones available only to current McGill Music students, faculty and staff

The equipment listed below is limited to borrowers who are current McGill Music students, Music faculty, and Music staff.

Shure SM7B vocal microphone (user manual)

  • Three (3) single classic cardioid dynamic microphones are available for loan
  • Meant for recording clear, smooth warm vocals

Røde M5 cardioid compact condenser pair (user manual)

  • One matched pair of cardioid compact condenser microphones is available for loan
  • Sometimes called “pencil mics”, these mics are best suited for recording acoustic instruments, overheads, or spoken dialogue indoors
  • The cardioid microphone polar response pattern means that this microphone will pick up sound directed into the end of the microphone and reject sound from the rear of the microphone
  • As with any condenser microphone, requires phantom power to operate

Oktava MK-012 (operating instructions)

  • One matched pair of MK-012 microphones are available for loan
  • Good for precision and great for recording situations where microphones need to be unobtrusive
  • Comes with a -dB attenuation pad to be screwed in between the mic body and mic capsule to reduce the sensitivity of the mics by 10 decibels. (Mainly helpful with loud sound sources to achieve a more manageable signal)

Audiotechnica AT4041 (user manual)

  • One (1) pair of electret condenser microphones are available for loan
  • Rugged and durable, this microphone is well suited for recording drum overheads, acoustic guitar, piano, horns, and under-snare applications

DPA 4099 instrument mics (user manual)

  • Ten (10) DPA 4099 condenser microphones are are available for loan
  • Each microphone has a different clip designed specifically for that instrument:
    • Bass, Brass, Cello, Drums, Guitar, Piano Sax, Violin, and Woodwind (the piano kit comes as a set of two microphones). Additionally, there is a Clamp Mount microphone for attaching the 4099 microphone to a variety of different materials
  • Intended for close-miking individual musical instruments

DPA 4061 necklace mics (user manual)

  • Two (2) DPA 4061 omnidirectional condenser microphones are are available for loan
  • Lavalier-style microphone attached to a non-detachable rubberized necklace
  • Good for recording dialogue and spoken word

Sennheiser MD421-II (user manual)

  • Two (2) single cardioid microphones are available for loan
  • Broadcast microphone good for interviews, spoken word recording, vocals

Sennheiser MD441-U (user manual)

  • Two (2) single super-cardioid microphones are available for loan
  • Dynamic microphone offering balanced sound even at higher sound pressure levels
  • Sound quality rivals a condenser mic
  • Good for recording vocals and instruments

Audiotechnica AT4050 (user manual)

  • Two (2) single muti-pattern condenser microphones are available for loan
  • Good for recording applications where transparent uppers/mids balanced by rich low-end qualities are preferred

Audiotechnica AT4050ST (user manual)

  • One (1) single stereo large-diaphragm condenser microphone available for loan
  • Able to record in stereo Left/Right or discrete Mid-Side recording setups
  • Has independent cardioid and figure-of-eight condenser elements

Beyerdynamic M88 TG (user manual)

  • Two (2) single hypercardioid dynamic microphones are available for loan
  • Rugged construction, with a wide frequency response with detailed bass response
  • Good for handheld or stand-mounted applications, particularly good for vocals and speech

SE Electronics se2200a II (user manual)

  • Two (2) single large-diaphragm, multi-pattern condenser microphones are available for loan
  • Good for recording vocals and instruments with a large dynamic range

Electrovoice RE320 (user manual)

  • Two (2) dynamic microphone microphones are available for loan
  • Good for sound reinforcement and recording applications requiring extremely low noise
  • Great for bass drum miking

Lauten LA-320 (user manual)

  • One (1) single vacuum tube, large-diaphragm condenser microphone is available for loan
  • Vacuum-tube microphone with built in switches for high and low cut filters
  • Good for recording acoustic instruments and vocals
