Citation guide for music

A guide to citing music resources, with a focus on Chicago-style citation examples for various types of music materials

Reference list / bibliography

Here are some tips for organizing a list of works cited.

  • Indent after the first line of each entry (CMOS 2.24)
  • List alphabetically by the first author's last name (CMOS 15.11)
  • For a work with no author, list alphabetically by the title (skipping the initial article) (CMOS 15.34)
  • Only the first author's name is inverted (CMOS 15.16)
  • A single-author entry precedes a multiauthor entry beginning with the same name (CMOS 15.16)
  • For multiauthor entries with the same first author, list under the first author's last name, then alphabetically by the coauthors' last name (CMOS 15.16)
  • A 3-em dash which is often used by publishers to represent the same author named in the preceding entry is NOT recommended (CMOS 6.94)
  • For entries by the same author(s), arrange chronologically by the publication year, in ascending order (CMOS 15.18)
  • For entries by the same author(s) and same publication year, list them alphabetically by title, then differentiate each by adding an a, b, etc. after the year of publication, (CMOS 15.20)
