A guide to citing music resources, with a focus on Chicago-style citation examples for various types of music materials

Citing in other languages

In general, citing resources in languages other than English follows the same guidelines for each format. In the case of Chicago style, for non-Latin scripts, transliteration / romanization should be provided. Non-Latin scripts (e.g. Chinese and Japanese characters) could also be included if they help clarify the terms / names used (CMOS 11.90). Below are some useful resources for citing in various languages and styles.

Asian-language sources

  • Prepared by the University of British Columbia
  • For citing in 6 languages, namely Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Persian, and Punjabi 
  • Covers all major citation styles including APA, Chicago, and MLA
  • However, the styles illustrated may not follow the latest edition. Please use in tandem with the latest respective citation manuals.
