LGBTQ+ music guide

Literature: Databases

Music databases

To find literature about LGBTQ+ musicians and music practices, search the Music Library's full-text and bibliographic databases using relevant keywords (e.g., gay, lesbian, queer, LGBTQ+, etc.), the names of composers and musicians, or the titles of works. These databases include subscription and free web resources.

LGBTQ+ and Gender Studies databases

You can also find relevant literature about LGBTQ+ musicians and music practices in gender studies databases. For a comprehensive list, see LGBTQ+ and Gender Studies Databases on the LGBTQ+ Studies guide.

LGBTQ music bibliography

Compiled and updated by Jacob Sagrans, Keith Wace, and Professor Lloyd Whitesell. Updated March 2023.

This bibliography indexes music scholarship that features material on gender diversity, queer identity, culture, knowledge, or practice, or that approaches its topic from a queer, transgender, or anti-oppressive perspective. It does not index reviews or the popular queer press.
