EndNote Essentials-How to Guide (Biomedical)

CWYW

This feature allows you to insert citations and generate a bibliography automatically

  1. Inserting in-text citations
    • Place your cursor where your wish to insert your citation(s) in your Word document.
    • In the Endnote Library highlight the reference(s) you wish to cite.
    • Switch back to your Word document and, using the EndNote toolbar, select the arrow on the Insert Citation button > Choose Insert Selected Citation(s) from the menu.
    • Can also search for citation by clicking on Insert Citation

  2. Changing the citation style (e.g., from Vancouver to APA 6th or vice-versa): If style not visible, choose “Select Another Style…”

  3. Edit & Manage Citation(s)
  • Use to delete, move, edit your citations within your document.
  • Important note – Make any changes to your citation using this function. Do not edit, delete, modify within the citation and/or bibliography entry itself (anything that gets greyed when you click on it). The changes are not permanent, and CWYW will revert back to what you have in EndNote.
  1. Converting citations to plain text for final submission
  • In EndNote tab
    • MAC - Select Tools > Endnote > Convert to Plain Text
    • PC – Select Convert Citations and Bibliography > Convert to Plain Text

Why - EndNote and Word are connected, and EndNote will automatically fix, scan, and update your citations.

  • If you want to break the link between EndNote and Word, you can do that. This will turn all of your citations in Word into plain-text. This will stop any of your citations from being updated by EndNote.
  • Always save a copy of your document with the EndNote connection intact. It is not possible to undo this step. To break the connection with EndNote and remove the EndNote coding, click “Convert Citations and Bibliography” and “Convert to Plain Text.”
