EndNote Essentials-How to Guide (Biomedical)

Create a library

  • Browsers
    • All users – prefer Firefox over other browsers
    • Mac users – don’t use Safari
       
  • Under File choose New
     
  • EndNote creates a file with a .enl extension and a folder with a .Data extension for your EndNote Library. These two files have to be together at all times.
    • Don’t Save as package AKA .enlp
    • Cannot save to OneDrive, Google Drive – has to be saved on your computer

Import Journal Term Lists

Import Journal Term lists to substitute abbreviated journal names with the full journal title

 

  • Required step for each NEW library you create
  • Go to Tools > Open Term Lists > Journals Term List. Click on the Lists tab. 
     
  • Highlight Journals then click Import List.  The lists on a PC may be located in
    • PC – C:\\Program Files (x86)\Endnote 20\Terms Lists\
    • Mac – Applications > EndNote20 > Terms
       
  • Select Medical.txt for medical journals, BioScience.txt for biology etc. select as many as apply.
     
  • Click Open. Close the Term List window.
