Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies

Suggested reading for the course GSFS 300: Research Inquiry taught by Dr. Alex Ketchum in the Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies at McGill University. 

Just Methods is designed for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in a range of disciplines by addressing broad questions of research methodology. The readings are designed to help researchers think critically and constructively about the epistemological and ethical implications of various approaches to research selection and research design, evidence-gathering techniques, and publication of results.

From the introduction "In the participatory feminist research approach, girls and women actively participate in every stage of the research process in order to generate an analysis that is rooted in the reality of their daily lives. By explicitly aiming to change the social conditions of girls and women taking part in the research, the objective of participatory feminist research is to help transform society towards equality and justice, as advocated by feminism."

This book explores the intersections among queer theory, rhetoric, and research methods in writing studies and demonstrates how queer rhetorics of writing/composing, textual analysis, history, assessment, and embodiment/identity significantly alter both methods and methodologies in writing studies.

This book offers a guide to conducting research informed by feminist methods and is based on the premise that abstract discussion of methodological issues is most meaningful and instructive in conjunction with examples of actual research.
