Organizations & networks

  • GSSnetwork is a Network for Gender and Sexuality Studies in the Near East aiming at "promoting accessible, innovative scholarship, and fostering global interaction and cooperation among scholars and institutions engaged in women’s, gender, and sexuality studies across disciplinary lines in the Near East."
  • KARAMAH, Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights, is a non-profit organization "promoting human rights globally, especially gender equity, religious freedom and civil rights in the United States."
  • Musawah is a movement based in Malaysia advocating for "equality and justice in the Muslim Family."
  • Muslim Women's League (MWLUSA) is a not for profit U.S. organization advocating for Muslim Women's rights.
  • The revolutionary Association of the women of Afghanistan (RAWA) is the oldest political/social organization of Afghan women (founded in 1977).
  • Sisters in Islam is "a non-governmental organization working towards advancing the rights of Muslim women in Malaysia."
  • The Women and Memory Forum "was founded in 1995 by a group of women academics, researchers and activists concerned about the negative representations and perceptions of Arab women in the cultural sphere." Their website gives access to free ebooks to download (publications of the centre), and early 20th century periodicals. A bibliography of sources on women and gender studies
  • Women’s Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality (WISE) is a New York based not for profit organization advocating for Muslim Women's rights.
  • Women of Islamic Studies "is a crowdsourced database of women scholars who work on Muslims and Islam."
  • Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML) is "a transnational feminist solidarity network that promotes human rights and gender justice and equality for women whose lives are shaped, conditioned or governed by patriarchal and/or authoritarian interpretations of Islam."
