Google Scholar and EndNote Mac issue

If you are using a Mac, you may encounter one of two issues when trying to import citations from Google Scholar into your EndNote library.

  • The citation information (ex - author, article title, journal title etc) are not in the correct field, or there are random characters like % in the middle of field
  • You can't import the citation information at all(!) and see the following popup. This will happen if you've updated EndNote to version 9.1.

Workaround

  1. Click OK to make the popup go away
  2. Using Chrome as your browser, click on Import to EndNote. This generates a citation file for that article and downloads it to your computer. You can see the name at the bottom of your browser.
  3. Go to EndNote. In EndNote, click File > Import
  4. In the new window, click Downloads
  5. Click on Options (bottom left). Chage Import Options to EndNote Import
  6. Search or scroll through your Downloads folder to find the citation file. If you organize the folder by date, it's easier to find the file you're looking for.
  7. Select the citation file and click Import
