The aim of this site is to help students who take courses at the Institute of Islamic Studies to have access to resources and materials on Iran, its culture, history and literature.

Welcome! This subject guide details some of the most used sources for the study of classical and contemporary Iranian Studies. The guide is tailored to the courses offered by the Institute of Islamic Studies at McGill University*. It is divided into four categories: Shi'ism, Persian literature, Anthropology, and Persian linguistics.

Search the catalogue for materials for your research:


  • Persian Phonetic Keyboard Layout for Windows is for Microsoft Windows users interested to profit from their skill in typing with Latin QWERTY keyboards to type Persian characters much faster.
  • Lexilogos is a multilingual keyboard. 
  • Omniglot is the online encyclopedic writing systems

Two suggested fonts for the transliteration:

  1. Unicode fonts for Arabic transliteration
  2. New Times Arabic transliteration font


To search the Libraray Catalogues you need to use the Library of Congress Romanization tables for Persian.
