Finding physical books and scores by call number area

Browsing the physical shelves at the Music Library can help you locate books on similar topics or scores by the same composer or within the same genre. McGill Libraries uses Library of Congress call numbers to classify most of the materials in our collections. Classification allows similar items to sit together on the shelves.

The two kinds of call numbers for music books start with ML and MT. ML stands for music literature, while MT stands for music theory or music teaching. Call numbers for musical scores start with M. Library of Congress call numbers use a combination of letters and numbers.
