Digital Annotation

Allows you to work on texts and images. It helps you identify and mark named entities such as places, people, and events as well as establish relationships between annotations. It prepares your data in a variety of formats so that it can be used with other tools (GEPHI, GIS software, etc.) or connect to other data on the Web. All without the need to learn code.

Software that allows users to organize and describe research images. Users can add metadata, describe images, edit images, create image lists, add tags, etc. Tropy projects are fully searchable. ​
Projects can be exported in a variety of formats (sometimes with the help of a plug in).

Glycerine Workbench offers a comprehensive set of annotation tools and workflows designed for researchers, curators, and students to collaborate on projects across various repositories. Users can organize images into collections and share them with collaborators. Annotations can include semantic tags from specialized vocabularies and critical analysis in multiple languages. These annotated images can be published as research outputs in engaging visual formats and archived in sustainable formats. (Glycerine, 2024)

An open-source and free online platform for storytelling, enabling creators to pan and zoom over images and add annotations to highlight points of interest.

Exhibit platform that allows for a variety of formats (including a quiz). Images must have an IIIF manifest so you will need to use Glycerine (see above) to create a manifest link.

An open source tool for the publication of born digital multimedia content. Scalar books allow for multimedia annotations to text, images, audio, and videos.

This workshop, recorded on July 12, 2022, provides strategies and best practices to manage, organize, and store your research images. The session is divided in two parts: an overview of best practices in research data management for images and a tutorial on the image management software Tropy, a free open-source software that allows you to organize and describe photographs of research material.
