Audio Editing

Workspace

Editing Views - In Adobe Audition, you can select from two editing modes:

  • Waveform – creating or editing a single audio file.
  • Multitrack – assembling multiple files on a timeline and mixing them together.

To switch editors:

  1. Click the Waveform https://helpx.adobe.com/content/dam/help/icons/Waveform_View.png or Multitrack Editor https://helpx.adobe.com/content/dam/help/icons/Multitrack_View.png button in the tool bar.
  2. In the Multitrack editor, double-click an audio clip to open it in the Waveform Editor.

Creating Files

To create a new audio file/a multitrack session:

  1. From the menu, choose File > New > Audio File/Multitrack Session.
  2. Enter a file name and set related options.

Importing & Inserting Files

To import your audio files:

  • In the Files panel, click the Import File button .
  • Otherwise, from the menu, choose File > Import > File.

To insert files into a multitrack session:

  1. In the Files panel, select the file you want to insert.
  2. Click the Insert Into Multitrack button   at the top of the Files panel.

Otherwise, you can also drag the audio directly to the Multitrack Editor.

Recording

  1. Set audio inputs.
    1. From the menu, choose Edit > Preferences> Audio Hardware
    2. If you’re working on a Multitrack session, select Audio Hardware from the Default Input or Default Output drop-down

  1. At the bottom of the Editor panel, click the Record button  https://helpx.adobe.com/content/dam/help/icons/Record_button.png to start recording.
  2. Click the Stop button to finish your recording.

Tips: Always start recording with a few seconds of silence to capture the ambient sound. This will be used to remove the background noise in your audio recording.

Noise Reduction

  1. In the Waveform Editor, select a range that contains only ambient sound.
  2. From the menu, choose Effects > Noise Reduction/Restoration > Capture Noise Print.
  3. In the Editor panel, select the entire audio file.
  4. From the menu, choose Effects > Noise Reduction/Restoration > Noise Reduction.
  5. Set the desired options and apply.

Basic Editing

Viewing audio

  1. In the zoom navigator, drag left or right to scroll the timeline.

  1. To zoom in/out, right-click and drag in the zoom navigator or the timeline ruler.

The magnifying glass icon   creates a selection showing the range that will fill the Editor panel.


Selecting audio

  1. In the toolbar, select the Time Selection tool https://helpx.adobe.com/content/dam/help/icons/Time_Selection.png.
  2. Click and drag in the Editor panel to select a range.
  3. To extend or shorten a selection, drag the selection edges.


Copy, cut, paste and delete

You can use the delete key or standard copy, cut and paste key combination to edit selected audio clips.


Splitting clips

  1. In the toolbar, select the Razor Selected Clips tool .
  2. In the Editor panel, click where you want the split to occur.


Moving clips

  1. In the toolbar, select the Move tool .
  2. In the Editor panel, drag and drop the clips.

Adjusting Volume

  1. In the Editor panel, select the section of audio you would like to make the adjustment.
  2. In the gain control that floats above the panel, click and drag the decibel (dB) scale/manually type in a new value to adjust the volume. The number you see indicates how new amplitude compares with existing amplitude.

Fading In/Out

  1. Click and drag the fade control button at the start/end of the audio timeline.

  1. While still pressing down on the button, move the line up or down to adjust the rate of the fade in effect.

Exporting Audio Files

  1. From the menu, select File > Export > Multitrack Mixdown, then choose whether you would like to export a selected portion of your audio, an entire session, or multiple clips.
