The best place to search for scholarly articles on your topic is an article database

Recommended multidisciplinary article databases:

  • Scopus or Web of Science
    Large multidisciplinary science and social sciences databases that are capable of backward and forward citation linking and include citation counts. They also offers author profiles with affiliations, publication number and bibliographic data.

Examples of recommended subject-specific article databases:

  • Pubmed: 1946 to the present
    Published by U.S. National Library of Medicine, includes citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals.
  • BIOSIS Citation Index (subject-specific): 1926 to the present
    Encompasses the entire field of life sciences and provides comprehensive coverage of the world's published biological and biomedical research.
  • CAB Abstracts (subject-specific): 1973 to the present
    A bibliographic database that covers research and literature in the fields of agriculture, forestry, human health, nutrition, animal health, and resource management and conservation.
  • Compendex: 1884 to the present
    Covers all aspects of engineering, including biotechnology.
  • Agricultural & Environmental Science Collection: 1960 to the present
    Comprehensive coverage of the agricultural and environmental sciences including, for example, bacteriology, environmental biotechnology, agricultural economics, biodiversity, etc. This database also includes Pollution Abstracts, Toxline, and Water Resources Abstracts.

Research tips

Search tips:

Boolean operator AND e.g. insect AND migration: will retrieve articles containing both words; this will decrease your search results
Boolean operator OR e.g. migration OR dispersal: will retrieve articles containing either (or both) words petroleum OR oil, this will increase your search results
Parentheses (...) e.g. insect AND (migration OR dispersal): will retrieve articles with insect AND migration or articles with insect AND dispersal
Phrase searching “___” e.g. "global warming": will retrieve articles containing the phrase global warming
Truncation */? e.g. dispers*: will retrieve articles containing the words disperse, disperses, dispersing, dispersal, etc.
