Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality

This guide provides an introduction to the Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality services provided by McGill Library, as well as other resources to help explore the technology.

Oculus Rift DK2

Equipment: One headset with detachable cable, four lenses, position tracker with USB and sync cables, leap motion with holder and cables, USB extender, DVI to HDMI adapter.

How to use

Oculus Rift DK2 headsets are available to borrow from Schulich Science & Engineering Library and Humanities and Social Sciences Library - Check availability here. The kits come with a Quick Start Guide, but here are some links that may be helpful:

Art

  • Blocks - Easily create 3D objects in VR, no matter your modelling experience.
  • Sketchfab VR - Discover a showcase of explorations through remote places, fantastic creatures, game worlds, cultural heritage, science and other wonders.

History

  • The Unknown Photographer - A surreal plunge into the fragmented memories of a First World War photographer. This documentary/fiction hybrid invites participants to take a stroll through a museum, in a vivid dreamscape filled with stunning images accompanied by the photographer’s thoughts.

Mathematics

  • Calcflow - Manipulate vectors with your hands, explore vector addition and cross product. See and feel a double integral of a sinusoidal graph in 3D, a Mobius strip and it's normal or spherical coordinates!

Medicine & Anatomy

  • YOU - Explore an anatomically accurate 3D model of the human body, its organs, and their natural function. Visualize how your body works. Explore organs and systems in a fully immersive 3D environment.

Travel

  • Google Earth - Explore the world from totally new perspectives in virtual reality. Stroll the streets of Tokyo, soar over the Grand Canyon, or walk around the Eiffel Tower.
  • Smithsonian Journeys: Venice - Take a tour of Venice with a brilliant professor of Italian history as your personal guide. Enjoy over 30 minutes of 3D 360° video shot on location as you learn all about the history and culture of the city.

Nature

  • Bear Island - Bear Island is the story of a young black bear, named Swift, who is searching for a perfect fishing spot. But Swift is not the only one looking for food, she faces dangerous competition from older bears and hungry wolves - it’s up to you to help her negotiate the waterways and find a safe hunting ground.
  • Cat Flight - The story of a mother caracal and her kitten trying to find food in a desolate African desert. The mother’s hunting technique involves a monstrous leap that takes her well above human head height, then she tries to grab a bird in mid-flight. Witness this remarkable jump in real-life super slow motion and then discover how she does it in an interactive CGI world.

Space

  • Buzz Aldrin: Cycling Pathways to Mars - Journey with Dr. Aldrin from his landing site on the moon to Mars as shows you first hand his plan for inhabiting the Red Planet.
  • Mission: ISS - Take a trip into orbit and experience life on board the International Space Station! In this Emmy-nominated simulation, learn how to move and work in zero-gravity using Touch controllers. Dock a space capsule, take a spacewalk, and let real NASA astronauts guide you on the ISS through archival video clips.
  • Home - Enables would-be astronauts to embark on a spacewalk 250 miles above the Earth’s surface, something only 217 people have ever done for real.
