Endnote X8

NOTE: Endnote X8

(Nov 16, 2016)
Endnote X8 was released on November 8, 2016. The McGill installers for students and faculty are now available on our knowledge base (for both Windows and Mac).  In addition to being fully compatible with macOS Sierra, there is also some new functionality, including:

  • Library sharing with up to 100 other users
  • An activity log for tracking changes in shared libraries
  • Harmonized icons across Windows and Mac which better represent their functions
  • Versions X8 and X7 are cross compatible (so X7 users can share with X8 and vice versa)

As always, please contact us if you have any questions regarding this or any other aspect of citation management at McGill.

Endnote X7 and macOS Sierra

NOTE: Endnote X7 and Mac OS X (Sierra)

NOTE: Endnote X7 and macOS (Sierra)

(Oct 3, 2016)
Users running macOS Sierra who attempt to install Endnote using the site installer provided by McGill will find that they are asked to insert a registration key. We have discovered that, due to incompatibilities between Endnote X7 and macOS Sierra, even if this key is inserted by a librarian, the program will refuse to install.  Thomson Reuters have advised that a new version of Endnote (X8) will be released in November, at which point Endnote will again be compatible with macOS.

In the meantime, we recommend that users either install Endnote before upgrading to Sierra, or wait until X8 is released.

(Sept 19, 2016)

Apple will be releasing a new operating system, macOS Sierra, on Tuesday, September 20th.  The producers of EndNote have advised that, following testing, the PDF viewer function in EndNote X7 software is incompatible with this new operating system.  The recommendation for Mac users is to hold off on updating your laptops to macOS Sierra at the present time if you wish to use EndNote.

If you do decide to upgrade, please note that you are more than welcome to use the computers in any McGill library.  All our computers have the EndNote software installed on them.  You can also contact us if you have any questions, support requests or feedback.
